The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has finalized regulations to limit the amount of 1,4-dioxane, a chemical classified as a likely human carcinogen, in certain household products sold or offered for sale in New York.
Key Points:
- Strict Limits: The regulations establish maximum allowable concentrations of 1,4-dioxane in household cleaning, personal care, and cosmetic products.
- Effective Dates: The limits for household cleansing and personal care products are 1 ppm effective December 31, 2023, and for cosmetic products, the limit is 10 ppm effective December 31, 2022.
- Waivers: Manufacturers may apply for waivers if they can demonstrate efforts to reduce 1,4-dioxane or provide proof of compliance with the limits.
DEC Commissioner’s Statement:
“Protecting the health and well-being of New Yorkers is paramount,” said Interim DEC Commissioner Sean Mahar. “The regulations finalized today will enable DEC to fully implement the nation-leading law in place that helps prevent everyday household products from containing 1,4-dioxane for the benefit of the environment and our communities.” For more information on DEC’s final regulation restricting 1,4-Dioxane in consumer products please visit their website.
